HoustonChronicle.com - Party leaders state cases to black voters: "Speaking to a convention of lay leaders in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman and his Democratic counterpart, Howard Dean, spent an hour making their cases and answering questions.
Mehlman acknowledged that some in his party began ignoring blacks ? or worse, using race to whip up anger among white voters ? after Democratic President Johnson won passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
'Too many Republicans gave up on the African-American vote,' he said, later reminding an audience of several hundred at the Hilton-Americas hotel about his party's historical bonds with blacks and the church. 'We were wrong.'"
